Location description: A small village with a great speciality - saffron - sounds like the Orient and the Arabian Nights. But this exclusive plant is also harvested in Mund, a small Valais mountain village around 10 kilometres from Brig. Since 2013, the small village has been part of the municipality of Naters. The history of saffron goes back a long way: mercenaries smuggled the bulbs from the Orient to northern Spain hidden in their beards. From there, pilgrims to Santiago took them back to the Swiss mountains in the 14th century. However, cultivation is laborious and the yield is low, as only the pink pistil threads in the purple flower can be used. It takes 400 threads to produce one gram of saffron. For this reason, many Swiss farmers switched to other products after the initial enthusiasm and earned their living from the more profitable wine-growing, among other things.Basic information: - Pets allowed: none
